Green Professional Development

Professional Development: Teachers and Students

Sandy Point

Trinity practices professional development. All staff and students are aware of the school's efforts to become a Maryland Green School and work to prepare themselves in "going green" and support the development of a green school environment. We make time to attend environmentally related workshops, set aside time on our agenda to hold faculty meetings that discuss actions and the progress of our application, and partake in training/informational opportunities to develop new knowledge and skills about the environment in order to better guide our students or visa versa.

  1. Committee Meetings and Faculty Meetings
The green team teacher and student committees meet once a month for a minimum of 45 minutes to discuss and share environmentally-themed ideas, successes, results of activities and lessons and future goals. The committees will then present important information to the entire school community through announcements or flyers and faculty meetings. The green team leader gives updates for everyone. We have also given presentations to the school board and board of trustees on our accomplishments and progress.

  2. Gardener Mini Conferences
Every February, one of our teachers attends a Montgomery County Master Gardener Mini Conference, where they lecture and give "green" gardening tips.

  3. Go Green at the Science Center
Teachers and students have attended the 45 minute presentation/workshop about Green Roofs and the Chesapeake Bay at the Science Center. The following topics were discussed:
    • What's a tree doing atop a city rooftop? Green roofs keep their cool and help watersheds.
    • Students turn their magnifiers on Chesapeake Bay health as they explore the role of plants and soil in water quality. The Maryland Science Center's own green machine is highlighted in this program atop our green roof.

  4. Howard County Conservancy Stream Program
In April of 2014, the Howard County Conservancy conducted a stream program/professional development session for all middle school teachers and students. They worked with tools to collect and test the stream waters on campus and discuss plant and animal species found in a healthy stream and how these species are affected.

  5. Eco-Goats and Echoes of Nature Program
This program visited our school to teach students and faculty about environmentally friendly ways to rid invasive plant species from our gardens, outdoor classroom area, and surrounding campus. They brought Napoleon the goat to talk to us and demonstrate how these animals are trained to recognize and eat all unwanted species of weeds and plants. They also are used to fertilize the grounds.

  6. Sandy Point State Park Beach Trash Clean Up and Marsh Grass Planting
In this program, a group of students and several teachers were welcomed to a green day at Sandy Point State Park. They participated in going green and environmentally friendly activities such as planting grasses on the beach to protect them from erosion, and cleaning up trash around the area.
