The First Grade Curriculum

Religion

Children study the Catholic faith, focusing on the Church calendar, the Sacraments, and how God loves us and our community. The children are also encouraged to learn about God and to grow in their relationship with the Holy Trinity.

Language Arts

The Language Arts program in first grade integrates reading, phonics, spelling, grammar and writing. The Saxon series is a phonics-based reading program that systematically addresses the first grade learner building skills over the course of the school year. Each day, time is devoted to sounds and letters, reading and responding, grammar and writing. The students learn to be competent and effective writers by being guided through the steps of the writing process: pre-writing, writing the first draft, revising, editing, proofreading, and writing the final draft. The quick tempo of each lesson engages the students in learning through sight, sound and touch.

Handwriting

Handwriting continues with strengthen basic handwriting skills including proper pencil grip and correct letter formation. Many writing opportunities are provided throughout the day to develop fluency in handwriting.

Mathematics

The Saxon Math program is continued in first grade. In the Numbers unit students learn the concepts of whole number operation, whole number computation, fractions, and money. The Geometry unit includes Geometry and Spatial Relationships, time, calendar, temperature, linear measurement, weight, and capacity. Students are also taught data analysis, probability, patterns, and Algebra. Using the Saxon method, students are taught a new concept daily followed by review and reinforcement of previously learned concepts.

Social Science

The Social Science curriculum in first grade introduces students to a variety of units designed to help them gain a better understanding of the world around them. Through a multi-dimensional course of study, students take their understanding of a community to a global view of the various continents, countries and cultures of the world. Through hands on activities and experiments, students also explore earth science and learn about weather systems, as well as the animal species that inhabit our planet. Students work cooperatively in groups, as well as individually on projects and presentations. The curriculum is supported with a rich variety of materials to aide in learning and understanding. Through Weekly Reader, a broad spectrum of current events are incorporated and discussed.
